Waste Solutions to meet your needs

We can help an NHS Trust to deliver significant financial and environmental targets, and in particular, the reduction of waste to landfill and the implementation of improved segregation of clinical waste across a Trust.

Providing an environmentally friendly, low carbon and cost effective solution for the collection and disposal of all clinical waste streams, we can assist the NHS Trusts in the accurate segregation and the collection of clinical waste.

Using compaction reduces the amount of transport required and in addition to being financially beneficial, creates a smaller carbon footprint for the operation, reduces congestion, pollution and improves accessibility to the sites.

With compaction the global warming impact as measured by carbon footprint is reduced - through the avoidance of methane generation in Landfills and because of reduced vehicle emissions.  Recovered materials can often be re-used or re-processed instead of being thrown away.

Compaction of Offensive Healthcare Waste

While it is standard practice to compact non-hazardous waste materials, the compaction of non-hazardous ‘offensive’ healthcare waste has traditionally been avoided.  This is due to the potential exposure to foul odours or body fluids arising from the rupturing of the compressed bags, as well as non-statutory guidance relating to the storage of ‘offensive’ wastes.

Until recently, ‘offensive’ waste has been collected in wheeled bins which can cause issues with collecting, storing and transporting these wastes in a cost effective manner. A significant challenge is associated with the lightweight nature of offensive waste in bags as substantial space is required for storage and limits the number of bags that can be transported and disposed of per consignment from the site of production. This results in the overall cost of processing becoming similar or in some cases, more expensive than managing hazardous infectious healthcare wastes.

The use of the compactors to store Offensive Waste has now been approved.  This provides the following process and financial benefits:

  1. Significant cost savings associated with the reduced  haulage frequency of ‘offensive’ wastes
  2. Reduced transportation from site resulting in carbon savings
  3. A significant reduction in the space required to store ‘offensive’ waste on-site
  4. Full containment within in a sealed containers
  5. Increases in the speed of collection and disposal
  6. Elimination of health and safety risks associated with manually moving wheeled bins
